| Drowning is the only cause of childhood deaths that can be 100% prevented. You can inoculate a child against disease, but you can't totally prevent disease from happening. You can put a child in a child safety seat, but you can't totally prevent a car accident. That's why drowning is the leading cause of death among children under the age of five years in the United States. Conversely, drownings and near drownings CAN be prevented with the use of a pool fence place correctly around a swimming pool. When pool fences are installed around a family's backyard swimming pool, a complete barrier is created between a small child and the pool which remains in place 24/7. When correctly installed a swimming pool safety fence with a self-closing, self-latching, walk-thru gate, a baby, toddler or small child can safely be outside at any time of the year and not have access to the swimming pool; therefore, drowning accidents can't occur. The American Society of Pediatrics recommends a 4' high pool safety fence, with a self-closing, key-lockable walk-thru gate be placed around any pool where a small child spends time. I have attended meetings of POND - an acronym for Parents Of Near Drownings. Ask any parent who has gone through this horrible experience and without fail they will tell you that given the opportunity to go back in time they would have installed a pool safety fence and self-closing gate. To a person they will tell you that they never thought this life-changing accident could happen to them and their child. Remember - every pool accident can be avoided and every child can be kept safe around a swimming with the installation of a pool fence. It's the most important ounce of prevention available. Water is fun to play with, but it can also be deadly. Use these tips to protect your children from its hazards. Children are irresistibly attracted to water. It's sparkly. Things float in it and it makes a sound when you smack it. But water can also be dangerous. More than 1,000 American youngers drown each year. The age groups at greatest risk are toddlers and adolescent males. And for every child that drowns, there may be as many as four nonfatal submersions serious enough to require hospitalizatioin. Neighborhood Swimming Pools: About 300 chuildren under the age of 5 drown each year in U.S. swimming pools. In each of the incidents, most victims were being supervised by one or both parents. It takes only a few minutes for a child to drown. More than three-quarters of children who drown at neighborhood pools are missing from sight for less than five minutes. The key to preventing these tragedies is to have multiple layers of protection. These precautions can help keep children safer around swimming pools. Fence It In: Pools should be completely surrounded by fencing material. Gates should be self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be out of the child's reach. Install Alarms: If you house is one of the walls of your pool enclosure, doors leading to the pool area should be protected with alarms. In addition, add an underwater pool alarm which sounds when something hits the water. Make sure you can hear the alarm inside the house. Teach Children To Swim: But remember that swimming lessons won't drown-proof a child. The age to teach children to swim is the same as to ride a bike - age 5. Children under the age of 4 years usually aren't developmentally read for formal instruction in swimming The CDC Injury Surveillance and Prevention Program reports that in the United States, drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14. The World Health Organization (WHO) 2003 Report on Drowning and Injury Prevention reveals that worldwide, drowning is the third leading cause of death; with boys 1-5 at twice the risk as girls. The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (CDC 2005) reports that for every child who drowns, another four are hospitalized and 16 receive emergency department care for near-drowning. Children ages 1-4 -most vulnerable to swimming pool drowning According to the CDC’s 2001-2002 Child Water-Related Injuries Report: Most drownings occur in residential swimming pools among children ages 1 to 4. From the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) 2006 Pool & Spa Safety Report on Safety Barrier Guidelines for Home Pools (Doc 362 ) reports: 75 percent of the children involved in swimming pool drowning accidents were between 1 and 3 years old Help us promote pool safety and child-drowning awareness We strive each year to get better and better about promoting pool safety and child-drowning awareness at Pool Fences by Pool Guard. Children don’t have to die. Drowning CAN be prevented. Stand with us and see what we can do together to protect childhood drowning. Swimming pool drowning prevention for child safety - Pool Safety Fences by Pool Guard. Pool Fencing by Pool Guard was started to help protect and save children. Pool Guard’s sole mission is to provide pool fencing to pool owners to stop needless drowning deaths among vulnerable young children. CDC reports - Pool fencing prevents child drowning deaths The drowning statistics are clear that young children are most at risk for drowning or significant injury in home swimming pools. One statistic stood out for Pool Fences by Pool Guard when it came to keeping our children safe: According to the 2002 Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Report on Public Health Injury Surveillance and Prevention: …researchers estimated that proper pool fencing would have prevented about one-fifth of all drowning among children under 5. Pool fences are proven to be an effective tool in the fight to save children’s lives. Give serious consideration to installing pool fencing for your home swimming pool- for your child, your grandchildren and your neighborhood children. Pool Fencing Works! Pool gates are the most overlooked feature of pool fencing. Pool fence gates, however, are most critical to pool fence effectiveness and home pool child protection. Pool fences, in truth, are only as safe as the pool gate. In a 2001 study, not many but most children ages 1 to 4 years old were drowned at home in pools while not one but both parents were home and within a short five minute window (Brenner et al. 2001). If by modern standards extremely good parental supervision cannot save young children from drowning then clearly providing signs, restricting swimming areas and closing sliding glass doors are not enough. Secure pool fence gates improve pool fence child barrier safety The strength of a pool fence gate is an ideal measure of overall pool fence safety. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: Preventing a child from getting to a pool through a pool fence gate can be done by restricting the sizes of openings in the pool gate barrier and using self-closing and self-latching gates. Consider all pool access points to a swimming pool Pool Guard Pool Fencing recommends parents and pool owners consider all pool access points to a swimming pool and ensure there are adequate safety gates for each one -and not just a main entrance. Often pools require more than one pool gate. One gate may lead to the house, another gate to a yard and other gating to an outbuilding and so on. Protect your family and secure your pool safety gates. The phrase, “Stay out of the pool!” is like a clanging symbol in a child’s ear; meaningless noise. A swimming pool fence offers invaluable peace of mind; knowing that you have done all you could to create a safe environment for children – your children and your neighbor’s children. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 65 percent of swimming accidents occur in the immediate family swimming pool 33 percent occur in pools owned by relatives or friends. Even learning to swim is not enough for swimming pool protection without swimming pool fencing. According to recent studies, children who have the most confidence in their swimming ability do not have a lower incidence of drowning. Just the opposite seems to be the case, swimming pool fencing can prevent swimmers who think they can swim better than they actually can. With young children as well, swim lessons can provide a false sense of security for parents when it comes to swimming pool safety. A swimming pool fence can neutralize these misconceptions and provide safety for all these children. Constant individual supervision is the only fail-safe answer to child drowning prevention. In lieu of this, a Swimming Pool Fence is an effective safeguard. Pool Guard Swimming Pool Fencing can fill any gaps in parental vigilance that may occur- an accident no one can afford. Pool Guard has been in operation protecting children for over 15 years. Pool Guard offers installation and free estimates. It costs less than you think. Swimming pool owners have the power to pair their pool with the purchase of a swimming pool fence today. Pool owners don’t think twice when it comes to child safety; you can save a life with pool fencing. One question that parents have asked over and over again throughout the years is when is the best time to have a pool fence installed. For families who live in a home with an existing swimming pool and now have a small baby and want to protect their pool the answer is when the baby is between the ages of 6 to 9 months old. This is the age that is recommended by the National Safety Council, pediatricians and most drowning prevention committees. The reason for this being the perfect age is because although the baby may not yet be walking, a small child can't verbally communicate. They can't tell their parents that "this week I'm crawling, but next week I'm going to be walking". By having a pool fence installed BEFORE a baby is mobile, parents are guaranteeing the safety of their children around the swimming pool. Pool fences can never be installed too soon. Many customers find that they have a comfort level if the pool fence is installed while their baby is still in the infant stage. Also, many young families whose baby is not yet mobile have friends who visit with slightly older babies and toddlers. The pool safety fence being installed and in place gives them a sense of protection. For families who are moving into a new home with a swimming pool the best time to have a pool fence installed is the day you close on the home. The pool is a novelty to the children and moving day is always hectic. People are in and out and doors are left open. Everyone is distracted and too many times nobody is watching the little ones. If a pool fence is installed before a family actually moves into the home there is no chance of an accident. Even if a small child turns 6-9 months of age during the winter or a family moves into a new home with a pool during the winter months, it's time for the swimming pool fence.. The pool is outside 365 days a year - a swimming pool safety fence should be there to protect against drowning as well. Accidents know no seasons. Article By: Pool Safety Fences. |
