| Solid steel gates are quite strong and are good to look at as well. Steel gates are often marketed as "wrought iron", which can get confusing as there has not been a mill that produces wrought iron material in the US since 1985 . Very few companies make real wrought iron gates from imported from Europe; the cost is too high, and the labor too intensive. Steel is use as is easily molded to have the appearance of old iron, but it is actually less durable. On the plus side, homeowners that can afford steel can have the wrought iron look without the enormous price tag that is why we recommended and encourage Aluminum for all our gates. A standard gate is 4' - 6' tall and 32" - 36" wide. It should be wide enough for access for equipment such as wheelbarrows, mowers or tractors and the movement of materials. Also consider whether the garden should be accessible to wheelchairs, if the gate needs to be more than five feet wide, install a two-piece gate that latches in the middle would probably be a good idea because it would be uncomfortable to swing such a large gate, don't de worry about sagging because our gates will not sag.
